Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Kaleidoscope presents a program of songs on the subject of love, ranging from the Renaissance madrigal to the American popular song. Composers and poets have created some of their most intimate and beautiful expressions on the topic and this concert will remind us all that love is both universal and eternal.
The program will include Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre, essentially little “postcards” of love between Whitacre and his girlfriend (now wife) Hila Plitmann; selections from Liebeslieder Walzer (Love Song Waltzes), Op. 52 by Johannes Brahms, a tribute by the composer to his adopted home, Vienna, and the Strauss waltzes that were so much a part of the city’s musical fabric; and gems such as Dickau’s i carry your heart with me and Mullholland’s A Red, Red Rose. Kaleidoscope will also be sure to connect with the “romantic” in each of us as it presents a wide variety of popular love songs (think “Fools Rush In,” “Till There Was You,” and “Unforgettable”) that will melt the hearts of lovers, both young and old.
