Robert Shaw Remembered Music from the Shaw-Parker Years with special guest Alice Parker
Friday, May 5, 2006 8:00 p.m. - Roswell UMC
Anyone who loves choral music knows that the greatest conductor and interpreter of choral music in
the 20th Century was Robert Shaw. He is recognized primarily in Atlanta for his more than thirty year association with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and his legacy also includes a
remarkable body of work completed earlier in his career. In collaboration with his associate, Alice Parker, Shaw created a collection of choral arrangements for his famed Robert Shaw Chorale
nearly a half century ago that are still widely performed today. Consisting primarily of folk songs, folk hymns, and spirituals, these choral gems are among the finest
in the American choral tradition. In this tribute concert to Robert Shaw's life and legacy, we are honored to have Alice Parker as our guest conductor and
speaker. Miss Parker will offer reminisces of her work with Mr. Shaw, and will share her own remarkable talent as she leads The Michael O'Neal Singers in this concert of American classics.
