Experience the Sound and Grandeur of The Michael O'Neal Singers
Since its inception in 1989, The Michael O'Neal Singers organization has established itself as one of the premier symphonic choruses in the Southeastern United States. Indeed, this 150-voice
chorus has already released eight CDs, and performed in some of the most notable venues in the world, receiving high accolades for artistic excellence and crowd
-pleasing programming. These venues include Carnegie Hall in New York, the historic St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland, St. Paul's Cathedral and
Westminster Abbey in London,as well as the Parisian landmarks of Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur.
The excellence which defines The Michael O'Neal Singers comes from the ability to perform an amazingly diverse repertoire of choral music. Under the direction of Dr. Michael O'Neal, its founder and artistic director, the chorus has performed everything from the greatest masterworks to current popular standards. No
matter what score is in the hands of these musicians, there is vibrancy and commitment to the soul of the music that connects with the audience.
The auditioned, volunteer chorus members represent a cross-section of the metro Atlanta area's population, and range in experience from dedicated amateurs to veteran professionals.
The combination of this willing talent and the subtle musicianship of Dr. O'Neal creates a stunning musical experience that regularly sees audiences spring to their feet to applaud each performance.
The Michael O'Neal Chamber Singers are the professional core of the larger symphonic chorus. Called "the finest small chorus to emerge in more than a decade," by the Atlanta Journal
-Constitution, this 16-voice ensemble features talented soloists that blend seamlessly into a brilliantly robust and complex sound under Dr. O'Neal's experienced baton. In addition to highlighted
selections on concerts featuring the full chorus, this group performs its own mid-winter concert at Roswell United Methodist Church – the home of The Michael O'Neal Singers, as well as at
Oglethorpe University's Conant Center for the Performing Arts. MOCS has appeared at other concert venues in the metro Atlanta area, including Clayton College and State University's acclaimed
Spivey Hall, and is regularly featured on Atlanta and Georgia Public Radio classical music programs.
If you have not yet been a part of The Michael O'Neal Singers experience, the 2004-2005 season offers you the opportunity to hear the world's finest choral music performed in a manner that
would make the composers proud. Experience it for yourself!
Dr. Michael O'Neal Founder & Artistic Director
Founder/Artistic Director, Michael O'Neal, has guided the MOS since its inception with his vision for attaining the highest standards of choral excellence, while encouraging the love
and appreciation for such music among both audiences and chorus members. Dr. O'Neal's career in music has included three major emphases: conductor, tenor soloist, and educator. He has conducted over fifty of the
major choral/orchestral masterworks, and his choirs have performed at such places as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Westminster Abbey in London, the Haydn Festival in Austria, National
Concert Hall (Dublin, Ireland), and New York's Carnegie Hall. In 2002, Dr. O'Neal served as Co-Conductor of the British-American Church Music Festival in Great Britain, which included performances at
Canterbury Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and Edinburgh's St. Giles Cathedral. His solo career included opera and oratorio performances in Italy and Belgium, appearances on
National Public Radio and the Armed Forces Radio Network, five solo performances with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Robert Shaw, and two seasons as a member
of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in France.
Dr. O'Neal has combined his life as a professional musician with that of an educator, and taught for nearly twenty years at North Georgia College and Mercer University Atlanta. His commitment to
education is also integral to his approach to church music and he has worked at various churches throughout north Georgia during the past twenty-five years. He has held the position of Director of
Music at the 6500-member Roswell United Methodist Church since 1992.
2004 - 2005 Concert Season
A World of Song Friday, October 22, 2004, 8:00 p.m. - Roswell UMC
Folk music has been called the music of the people, and rightly so, for a country's folk music tells us much about its culture, values and
history. The Michael O'Neal Singers and Chamber Singers open the 2004-2005 season with a program celebrating the music of many lands. Performing music selections from Asia, Eastern
Europe, Western Europe, South America, Latin America and North America, MOS will delight your ears with sounds from around the world. As the songs of many nations are heard and enjoyed, we
will be reminded of the universality of the hopes and desires of all peoples, even as we savor the unique and individual ways in which these hopes and desires are expressed.
Christmas Echoes Sunday, December 5 · 3:00 p.m. -
Roswell UMC
Christmas, perhaps more than any other season of the year, is a time when we enjoy recalling years gone by with friends and family, even as we revel in the joy of the present. It
is in the music of Christmas that happy memories are often recalled and new traditions are begun. The Michael O'Neal Singers and Chamber Orchestra present Christmas Echoes, featuring Vivaldi's Gloria, a perennial holiday favorite, as well as many
other carols and seasonal selections that will start your Christmas season with delight.
Lovers and Poets Saturday, February 12, 2004
8:00 p.m. - Oglethorpe University Sunday, February 13, 2005 3:00 p.m. - Roswell UMC
The professional ensemble of MOS, The Michael O'Neal Chamber Singers, will combine music and poetry in a program perfect for Valentine's Day or any other time of the
year. For as long as poets have penned poems, the subject of love in all its myriad forms has been a favorite topic. Composers have found the subject just as irresistible and have created some
of their most intimate and beautiful expressions on the topic of love. MOCS will share poems and songs that span the centuries and remind us that love is both universal and eternal. The
performances will take place at the Conant Center for the Performing Arts at Oglethorpe University and at Roswell United Methodist Church.
Mendelssohn's Elijah Sunday, March 13, 2005
3:00 p.m. - Roswell UMC Monday, March 14, 2005, 8:00 p.m. The Temple on Peachtree
One of the most outstanding historical figures of the Old Testament was the prophet Elijah, and the composer Felix Mendelssohn set his story to music in what has become one of the world's
most famous oratorios, second only to Messiah by G.F. Handel. Elijah tells the tale of an extraordinary man through memorable solos, magnificent choruses, and sweeping pageantry. Bass John
LaForge, a favorite of MOS audiences, will sing the title role with the power and majesty it demands. Two performances of this timeless classic will be offered – at Roswell United Methodist
Church and The Temple on Peachtree.
MOS at the POPS Friday, May 6, 2005 · 8:00 p.m. · Roswell UMC
The Boston Pops Orchestra was formed in 1885 as a way of presenting "a lighter kind of music." Under the baton of Maestro Arthur Fiedler from 1930 to 1980, the Boston Pops
refined its tradition of mixing classical and popular programming in a tasteful, yet relaxed, setting and now the Pops concept has become one of the most enjoyable ways to hear a variety of
musical styles. The Michael O'Neal Singers will present its own version with MOS at the POPS, a program including light classical selections, show tunes and popular standards. This concert will
provide a perfect evening of entertainment and will bring the 2004-2005 Season to a rousing finale. Don't miss it!
