Sing Requiems, Sing Alleluias! A Tribute to Robert Shaw Friday, October 22, 1999, 8:00 PM Links to: AJC Online Preview, AJC Newspaper Preview
The Michael O'Neal Singers pay tribute to the most important and influential American choral conductor of the Twentieth Century. In honoring Robert Shaw, we celebrate his life and
his legacy, and we mourn his passing.
The concert opens and closes with two diverse expressions of praise – Randall Thompson's introspective and
haunting Alleluia and Handel's exuberant "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah.
Requiem (Op.9) by Maurice Duruflé encompasses musical styles from ancient Gregorian chant to the modern coloristic harmonies of Debussy and Ravel. A favorite of Mr. Shaw's, this work serves as a
testament of faith, comfort, and tranquility for a world too often marred with despair, brutality, and turmoil.
Chamber orchestra and organ will join the full chorus in this performance marking the beginning of our second decade and commemorating the end of an era in American choral music.
