and Monday, March 15, 2004, 8:00 PM at the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the Emory Campus in Decatur. 
By turns haunting, serene, and magnificent, Rachmaninoff's Vespers (All Night Vigil) combines unaccompanied sacred texts with stirring melodies, rich bass lines, and moving expressions of spirit and awe. Drawing on several forms of ancient chant and liturgy dating from the 14th century, this glorious Russian choral masterpiece captivates listeners with its wonderfully unique blending of melodic and harmonic elements. Rachmaninoff's Vespers stands today as the pinnacle of Russian liturgical music. Sung without accompaniment, the choruses are harmonically rich, with the low bass tones often associated with Russian choral singing. At 3:00 p.m., Dr. Michael O'Neal will host a pre-concert talk to provide background for the concert. A member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers which recorded the Grammy Award-winning Vespers release in France (Telarc, 1989), Dr. O'Neal will share anecdotes from his personal experience performing and recording this work under the directions of the late Maestro Robert Shaw.
