MOS Announcements

September 14, 2006

Thank you very much for a great first rehearsal last Monday night. Michael was very pleased with how the group sounded. I appreciate your patience with all of the administrative "stuff" we had to take care of that night.
Our Tenor Musical Section Leader, Joe Steele, has located some useful Web sites which may help your practice on the Holocaust Cantata. The first one is a webcast (audio/video) of a live performance of the Holocaust Cantata performed last year by the Master Chorale of Washington at the Library of Congress (the actual music begins about 20 minutes into the recording):

Also, Donald McCullough has a website that provides 4 complete tracks from his Holocaust Cantata CD:

Thank you, Joe! See you all Monday evening.

From Lee Herring:

Good evening and welcome to those who are new to MOS and welcome back those of you who are returning. My name is Lee Herring and I am the Board Chairman for The MOS, Inc. organization. I wanted to take a couple of minutes to familiarize you with the organization and share a few changes we will have this season.

MOS was established in 1989 as a non profit having grown from a 50-60 singer group in Decatur with Michael as our only paid staff person to today where the run between 130-140 singers being supported by a staff that includes Michael, a FT Executive Director and PT Financial Administrator and PT Chorus Manager. The Summer Singers has also added a new dimension, having just completed our second successful session with 185 non-auditioned singers participating. MOS has grown from rather meager financial beginnings to a budget for the 2006-2007 season that will run in excess of a quarter of a million and growing!

The growth in the organization is not only measured in terms of members and the ever-increasing quality of our repertoire but increases in expenses that are supported by revenue driven to a great degree by individual donations and ticket sales. As with most arts organization, corporate gifts, grants and other funding sources are available but difficult for choral arts organizations to compete for. So we must depend the generosity of our patrons and supporters while we all work diligently to sell tickets to all of our concerts.

The MOS Board of Directors, which consist of eleven passionate individuals, are charged with the responsibility of fulfilling our strategic plan which requires that we maintain a balance between the artistic and administrative segments of the organization. With this charge, we are continually looking for ways to make the best use of our resources as the organization continues to grow.

With that being said, I wanted to share with you a couple of changes we are making this season that will give us more flexibility with our financial resources and remain on the cutting edge.
First, while we will maintain our MO Chamber Singers, moving forward this will be a larger unpaid group that will be featured in our concerts during the season. We have had a many excellent vocalist in this group who have made great music over the past few years. I would expect to have the same sort of quality as we move in this new direction.
Another change made was around the Assistant Conductor position. We have been extremely fortunate to have had the expertise of Toni Myers both as a paid and volunteer staff member holding this position over the past couple of seasons. For those of you who know Toni easily recognize her significant contribution to this position and would want to personally thank her for all that she had done in that role. While we will miss her this season, our hope is to have her back singing with us in the future. As we move forward, we will be seeking out other alternatives such as Music and Admin Section leaders who would assume some of these responsibilities…..some significant changes for us but done with the long-term administrative and artistic health of the organization in mind!

Hopefully you can see that in order for us to be able to enjoy making great music for both our own enjoyment as well as that of our audiences, it takes the artistic vision of someone like Michael O'Neal, the generous financial gifts of patrons and folks like yourselves and a dedicated, committed staff and board of directors to ensure that the organization continues to grow and prosper. Without a money tree to pull from as needed to support our organization, we will depend upon folks like you and others to do your part with selling tickets and, if you are so incline to do so, become a patron at the Friend level or all the way up to Legacy level.

On behalf of the MOS Board of Directors, we very happy to have each of as a part of MOS this season and look forward to a great season.
