An Open Letter To MOS Friends and Patrons
Dear Friends,
As the MOS approaches the end of its Tenth Anniversary Season, I am filled with many thoughts and emotions. I remember with profound gratitude the persons who shared my dream
for this organization and worked so diligently to bring the dream to life.
I remember the excitement and exhilaration of our first three seasons in Decatur and Gainesville. I remember our relocation to Roswell when I accepted the position as Director of Music at Roswell United Methodist Church.
The opportunities for growth that this move
presented were enormous, and in the past seven seasons many good things have happened. We have released five compact disc recordings, which are receiving critical acclaim and national
distribution. We have collaborated with numerous arts organizations in the community, e.g., Orchestra Atlanta, Gwinnett Young Singers, Atlanta Wind Symphony and Georgia Sinfonia. We have established the Chamber Singers as a professional ensemble (the first such group in the
Atlanta area) while maintaining the volunteer status of the full chorus and its aim of singing for the love of the art. We have commissioned our first composition (Return to Old Ireland by Mary McAuliffe), which recently
received its world premier by the MOS. We have created a web site that has received over two hundred national and international awards. We
have made several European tours; this year's tour to Ireland will include a
performance in Dublin's National Concert Hall, Ireland's own Carnegie Hall. Finally, I am filled with appreciation to all of you who have helped our
concert attendance grow so dramatically. As an example, our two most recent concerts by the full MOS have each drawn audiences of approximately 2000 persons.
Of course, while it is always enjoyable to reflect on a successful past, it is
probably more useful to plan for a successful future. Certainly, that is what we are doing in the MOS. We plan to continue to bring you excellent performances of great choral music (the 2000-2001 season will include Bach's monumental B Minor Mass). We will also strive to offer innovative
and interesting programming (the 2000-2001 season will also include a concert entitled "The Gospel According to Andrew Lloyd Webber" featuring Requiem and other Lloyd Webber pieces with religious overtones). We will
continue our recording projects, making it possible to preserve the best of
our artistic efforts. We also hope to utilize orchestral accompaniment with an increasing number of our performances. We will continue to develop
the Chamber Singers as a professional entity extending the national recognition of the MOS.
In conclusion, I want to express my appreciation to all of you who have encouraged us during these past ten years. Audience members, financial
supporters, singers, support staff and countless volunteers have all contributed to our success. The number of people who share the goal and
the dream only strengthens such a labor of love as The Michael O'Neal Singers. My hope for the future is that we will continue in a profound way
to touch the lives of singers and audience members through the art of choral music. Thank you for these past ten years.
In lasting appreciation,
