Chamber Singers' "Timeless" Concert and MOS "Return To Old Ireland" Headline Winter '02 Schedule
Dear Friends,
Greetings to all our loyal listeners as we begin the second half of our 2001-2002 Season. We have two concerts fast approaching which I know you will want to attend. First is Timeless, performed by The Michael O'Neal Chamber Singers, our twenty-voice professional ensemble.
The program will range from Renaissance pieces to present day selections, all with the unifying feature of being "timeless" in one way or another.
You'll hear Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei, a vocal version of his exquisite and
haunting Adagio for Strings. Wondrous Love and Shenandoah will remind you of the simple beauty of folk melody. John Tavener's mystical Song for Athene, which
gained worldwide acclaim when performed at the funeral of Princess Diana, will last long in your memory. The Chamber Singers will even delve into the world of "pre-rap" as they 'speak' Ernst Toch's Geographical Fugue, a 'world tour' from
fifty years ago. The concert wouldn't be complete without some "classic" popular songs, and I know you'll enjoy George Gershwin's 'S Wonderful and I Got Rhythm, and Harold Arlen's Over the Rainbow.
There will be two opportunities to hear this unique and fascinating presentation, so plan to come to Oglethorpe University's Conant Performing Arts Center on
Tuesday, February 12 at 8:00 p.m. or to Roswell United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 17 at 3:00 p.m. Better still, come both times – and bring a friend!
March brings its famous winds, but it also brings St. Patrick's Day, and The Michael
O'Neal Singers will recognize this most special of holidays (please forgive my personal pride!) with a concert entitled Return to Old Ireland on Friday, March
15, 8:00 p.m. at Roswell UMC. The concert will feature a 'reprise' performance of the MOS commissioned work by Mary McAuliffe, Return to Old Ireland. MOS
premiered Return to Old Ireland in March of 2000, and it has since received numerous performances, both here and abroad. Mary will travel from her Dublin home to join us for this exciting
presentation, which you won't want to miss. Also appearing on our stage will be The Mulligan Irish Step Dancers, who
thrilled us two years ago with their exhilarating dancing. Rounding out the concert will be performances by MOS of some of Ireland's most beloved songs, including 'Tis the Last Rose of Summer, Molly Malone, Irish Lullaby (Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra), and of course, Danny Boy.
Don't forget to wear your shamrocks as you join us on Friday, March 15!
Sincerely,
|
