Fall MOS Concerts Feature International Folk Music and Majestic Christmas Pieces
Dear Friends,
MOS is first and foremost a partnership between its singers and its audience. In recognition of that partnership, our Mission Statement declares that the purpose of MOS is to enrich the quality
of life in our community through performance of choral repertoire that engages the audience and is challenging and rewarding for the singers. For about a year we have been
using a phrase in many of our publicity materials that says essentially the same thing – serious music, seriously fun. In a nutshell, that's what we are
about and that's what you can expect at a MOS concert.
A World of Song kicks off the season on Friday, October 22 at 8:00 pm and it most certainly will be fun as we explore musical ideas from around the
world. Taking 'folk music' as our theme, the program will include the many styles of expression found across the globe in the music of the people. From the rich harmonies and
rhythmic energy of African folk music to the exquisite settings of gypsy folk songs by Johannes Brahms, the concert will take us
on a world tour that will recognize each country's unique approach to music and also remind us of the universal hopes and truths held by people everywhere.
You'll hear the beautiful and sensitive Japanese folk song, Sakura, Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) and the West Indies influenced Turn the World Around, made famous by Harry
Belafonte and once performed on The Muppet Show! As you can see, there will be something for everyone at this concert!
Christmas Echoes features traditional holiday repertoire along with innovative modern classics for a
holiday concert that will stay long in your memory. The centerpiece of the Sunday afternoon performance, December 5 at 3:00 pm, will be Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria. One of the
most often performed pieces on Christmas concerts, Gloria is a joyful and exuberant expression entirely appropriate for any Christmas celebration. With soloists from The Michael O'Neal
Chamber Singers and a chamber orchestra comprised of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians, you will thoroughly enjoy Vivaldi's captivating music. The rest of the concert will include
a wide variety of Christmas tunes, including favorites like Away in a Manger and I Saw Three Ships, as well as selections by two of our finest contemporary American composers, Morten
Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre. I encourage you to begin your month of holiday celebrations with Christmas Echoes. You won't be disappointed!
This is going to be a tremendously exciting and rewarding year for MOS. Thanks for being a part of it.
Warmly,
