Eating and drinking are activities that are universal to all humankind, so it’s not surprising that they have been popular subjects with poets and composers through the years. Kaleidoscope, known for the variety of its programming, takes a look (largely humorous) at the subject of food and drink in a concert entitled A Musical Smorgasbord. Music will include John Rutter’s Banquet Fugue, Allan Robert Petker’s The Feast, Carl Orff’s In taberna quando sumus, Vaughan Williams’s Wassail Song, and selections from P.D.Q. Bach’s The Seasonings. Musical Theatre will also be represented with Food, Glorious Foodfrom “Oliver” and Be Our Guestfrom “Beauty and the Beast.” You’ll even hear a tribute to coffee in Java Jive, made famous by both the Ink Spots and Manhattan Transfer.
