Bluegrass, Gospel, and Spirituals
The 2015-2016 season of The Michael O’Neal Singers begins with a tribute to three uniquely American song genres. The sounds of Bluegrass, African-American Spirituals, and 20th century Gospel will have you clapping your hands and tapping your toes as you experience a lively outpouring of joy expressed through the singing of the full 160-voice MOS Chorus.
The singers and instrumentalists will open the concert with songs and hymns performed in a Bluegrass style. You’ll hear pieces like Amazing Grace; Swing Down, Chariot; and O Come, Angel Band, all accompanied with guitar, mandolin, bass, and banjo. If you’ve ever enjoyed a Gaither Homecoming program, you’ll have an idea of what to expect with this concert!
The Chorus next pays tribute to one of the most popular forms of American choral music – the African-American Spiritual. MOS will perform settings by one of the most celebrated arrangers of African-American Spirituals in the 20thCentury, Moses Hogan. You’ll hear old favorites like Ain’t That Good News, My Soul’s Been Anchored, and The Battle of Jericho.
The concert will conclude with a celebration of 20th century Gospel music. Piano, drums, and bass will accompany MOS in rousing versions of pieces such as My God is an Awesome God, Praise His Holy Name, and He Never Failed Me Yet.
