In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, we are thrilled to present a concert honoring the ideals, voices, and musical traditions that have shaped our nation. From folk hymns and patriotic songs to powerful choral masterworks, Of Thee We Sing: A Celebration of 250 Years, explores the many ways composers and poets have expressed the American spirit.
The program will begin with the audience joining the chorus in The Star-Spangled Banner, our national anthem, and continues with works that reflect the diversity of American musical life – from the poetry of Walt Whitman and the soaring choral writing of Howard Hanson and Randall Thompson – to beloved spiritual and folk traditions, and the expansive vision of Aaron Copland. Along the way, composers such as Stephen Paulus, André J. Thomas, and J. Rosamond Johnson give voice to the hopes, struggles, and aspirations that continue to shape our national story.
Taken together, these works celebrate not only America’s past, but the enduring promise of its ideals – liberty, unity, and the belief that many voices together can create something greater than any one voice alone.
